#cmh23Kentucky Country Music is celebrating our talented females in the music industry each day in March for Women's History Month. You will see some of our favorites, both musicians, singers, songwriters, managers, publicists, & more. They're the backbone of our KY musical heritage.

March 24, 2019 - Linda Jean Stokley and Montana Hobbs are holding on to true Appalachian music tradition with their duo, The Local Honeys. They have truly preserved the qualities of the old traditional music, whether it be Jean Ritchie or Ralph Stanley. Their debut album, “Little Girls Actin’ Like Men," set themselves apart in their music. They have become ambassadors of Appalachia and Kentucky with their shows worldwide. What is even more cooler, they were the FIRST women to receive Bachelor of Arts degrees in Traditional “Hillbilly” Music from Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky. In 2017, they were winners of the 2017 Chris Austin Memorial Songwriting Contest at Merlefest in Wilkesboro, North Carolina for their anti-strip mining song, “Cigarette Trees.”

Individually - Banjo picker Montana Hobbs is originally from Lee County, KY. She teaches private music lessons in Beattyville. In 2016, she was awarded the Kentucky Folk Arts Council “Folk Art Apprenticeship” grant. Through this program, Hobbs became the apprentice of east Kentucky master banjoist and songster, John Haywood. Together they aim to preserve the endless beauty and magic that is the eastern Kentucky banjo style passed down for generations.

Fiddler player, Linda Jean Stokley grew up on her family farm in Woodford County, KY. During college, she toured China, as well as southeast United States with Raymond McLain of the legendary McLain Family Band. In 2015, she received the "Folk Art Apprenticeship Grant" from the Kentucky Arts Council with Master Fiddler Jesse Wells. In 2017, she won first place in the bluegrass category of the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest at MerleFest for her anti-strip mining song, "Cigarette Trees." She continues to teach at the Central Music Academy in Lexington.
