Country legend Dolly Parton died Tuesday, Aug. 25, at the age of 80. Though an exact cause of death has not yet been revealed, the sad news came after several health shakeups forced Parton to reconfigure her ever-busy schedule — even if it never seemed to rattle her indomitable spirit and passion for work.
Parton kept the exact nature of her health problems tightly under wraps, revealing only that they were related to her digestive and immune systems. And when addressing fans, she always remained positive, peppering her remarks with jokes and insisting that whatever was holding her up was just temporary. All the while, Parton continued to fine-tune her Broadway musical, which is slated to open next year, and to work on other projects, such as the opening of a museum and hotel in Nashville.
The first statement Parton shared about her health arrived in late September 2025, when she postponed six concerts at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, originally slated for that December. Parton told fans that “health challenges” had derailed her concert rehearsals.
“As many of you know, I have been dealing with some health challenges, and my doctors tell me that I must have a few procedures,” Parton wrote on Instagram at the time. “As I joked with them, it must be time for my 100,000-mile check-up, although it’s not the usual trip to see my plastic surgeon!”
This announcement caused additional speculation that Parton’s health was the reason she would be unable to attend the Motion Picture Academy’s annual Governors Awards to accept her honorary Oscar in person. A rep for the country icon rebuffed those claims, saying Parton told the Academy several months prior that she would not be able to attend due to a scheduling conflict. (Parton eventually gave her acceptance speech via video from Nashville.)
Still, concerns didn’t immediately dissipate. In early October 2025, Parton’s sister, Freida, shared a statement asking everyone to keep the country legend in prayer. Freida later insisted she “didn’t mean to scare anyone,” and Parton herself offered some reassurance in a video filmed while cutting some commercials for the Grand Ole Opry.
“I know lately everybody thinks that I am sicker than I am. Do I look sick to you?,” she quipped, adding: “I wanted to put everybody’s mind at ease, those of you that seem to be real concerned — which I appreciate and I appreciate your prayers, cause I’m a person of faith. I can always use the prayers for anything and everything. But I want you to know that I’m OK.”
Parton said she’d been dealing with “some problems” that had surfaced after her husband, Carl Dean, died in May 2025. “When he passed, I didn’t take care of myself,” Parton continued. “I let a lot of things go that I should have been taking care of. Anyway, when I got around to it, the doctor said, ‘We need to care of this, we need to take care of that.’”
Parton went on to insist the problems were “nothing major,” and even joked about a ridiculous AI-generated image that showed her on her deathbed with Reba McEntire standing nearby. “Oh, lordy,” Parton deadpanned. “I mean, they had Reba at my deathbed, and we both look like we need to be buried!”
Over the coming months, Parton shared some holiday well-wishes with fans and released a new music video for her 1977 song “Light of a Clear Blue Morning.” But it wasn’t until this past March that she made her first public and in-person appearance of the year. Taking the stage at Dollywood to celebrate the theme park’s 41st season, Parton briefly mentioned her health issues, saying, “We’re taking good care of them.”
She added: “I just kind of got worn down and worn out, grieving over Carl and a lot of other little things going on. I needed to build myself back up, spiritually, emotionally and physically. But all is good. It didn’t slow me down.”
Then in May, Parton announced that she was canceling her previously postponed Vegas shows (which had been rescheduled for September 2026). In a video, Parton said she’d been “responding really well to meds and treatments,” but needed more time before she was “stage-performance ready.” She also mentioned long-running issues with kidney stones, and said that over the past three years her immune and digestive systems had gotten “all out of whack.”
Parton went on to say that her doctors had told her that everything she was dealing with was “treatable,” and the reason she called off the Vegas shows was that some of her medications and treatments were making her “a little bit swimmy-headed.” (In classic Parton fashion, she then joked that she couldn’t be dizzy while onstage while wearing five-inch heels. “Not to mention, all those heavy rhinestone outfits, the big hair, my big… uh personality,” she quipped, looking down at her chest. “Lord those — that would make anybody swimmy headed!”)
At the end of June, Parton made another public appearance to commemorate the opening of Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stop, a new travel center and truck stop in Cornersville, Tennessee. But in early August, she preemptively called off a September appearance at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, where she was set to be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Americana Honors & Awards. Organizers for the show said that Parton would instead accept via a virtual video message.
A couple of weeks later, Parton abruptly canceled an in-person appearance for the unveiling of a new roller coaster at Dollywood. Apologizing to fans for not being able to be there in person, Parton mentioned that she’d been feeling dizzy and getting dehydrated, which is why her doctor instructed her not to travel.
One of the final updates on Parton’s health came just a few days ago, Aug. 22, in an interview with People. Parton reiterated that she was dealing with issues that cropped up while taking care of Dean. She also addressed the constant chatter about her health, arguing social media magnifies every incident in ways it didn’t use to years ago.
“I used to joke that I was the Queen of the Tabloids, but now I guess I can say I’m the Queen of Social Media AI!,” she cracked, before adding, on a more serious note: “Even though I’m still healin’, I’m still workin’.”
